Hawa Mahal
Overview of Hawa Mahal
Hawa Mahal, or the 'Palace of Winds', is perhaps the most iconic landmark of the Pink City. Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, this stunning five-story structure features 953 small windows (jharokhas) decorated with intricate latticework. It was specifically designed to allow the royal ladies to observe everyday life and street festivals from behind the screens without being seen. The unique honeycomb structure is made of pink and red sandstone and is built without a traditional foundation, making it one of the tallest buildings in the world without a base. Its architectural design also facilitates a natural cooling effect through the 'venturi effect', keeping the palace interiors cool even during the peak of summer.
